THE MEANING OF LIFE: A SELF PORTRAIT will open at the 643 Project Space in Winter 2023. Artist Jo Ann Block will be presenting her solo exhibition work THE MEANING OF LIFE: A SELF PORTRAIT at 643 Project Space. The exhibition launch party will take place on Friday, February 3, 2023, at 6 p.m. at 643 Project Space, located at 643 N Ventura Avenue Ventura, CA 93001. Lite bites and refreshments will be provided in the open air patio. Admission is free.

With a fierce commitment to pushing boundaries and experimenting and investigating queer history, sexuality and identity Jo Ann Block, has created a multi-piece, multi media installation THE MEANING OF LIFE: A SELF PORTRAIT. This exhibition is the artist’s most recent exploration of what constitutes identity. “In this work I pose the question: since I am not a follower of a religious group, with a prescribed doctrine and precepts to offer me direction, what principles, experiences, beliefs have shaped my life? drawing on existential philosophy that proposes that life is meaningless and we all suffer from alienation, which I believe captures the zeitgeist of our times, the objects in this installation reflect on what has given my life meaning from young adulthood to present age. I explore the existential directive that calls on us to navigate through life in a purposeful way, by taking full responsibility for our actions, questioning societal norms and values, and discerning for ourselves what is meaningful.”
