cosmic country

NEW PAINTINGS BY CHRISTINE MORLA

OCTOBER 2 – OCTOBER 30, 2009

RECEPTION: FRIDAY, OCTOBER 2, 2009, 6:00 TO 9:00 PM
DURING FIRST FRIDAY

643 A Project Space is pleased to announce COSMIC COUNTRY, an exhibition of recent work by painter, Christine Morla. The exhibition will run from October 2-October 30 with an opening reception on Friday, October 2, 2009.

In her most recent paintings made of candy wrapper and acrylic, Morla creates meticulously woven abstract landscapes that possess a bold fusion of traditional weaving and modern abstraction. Her multilayered work displays the thematic influence of her Filipino heritage- specifically, the aesthetic values derived from the country’s mass-produced consumer products. Morla combines this cultural influence with a vibrant, pixilated color palette, resulting in a hybrid of patterns from nature and a digitally immersed space.

Christine Morla has exhibited nationally and internationally in Art Frankfurt (Germany), Rimjaus Gallery in Mexico City, Riverside Art Museum, Raid Projects and the 18th Street Arts Center among other venues. Currently, she is a Professor of Art and Chair of the Art department at Oxnard College. Morla graduated with an MFA from Claremont Graduate University and a BA from Loyola Marymount University.

A reception will be held on Friday, October 2, 2009 from 6:00-9:00 pm. The show is free and open to the public. 643 A Project Space is an alternative contemporary art gallery exhibiting emerging and established national and international artists. The gallery is located near downtown Ventura on the west end at 643 N. Ventura Av, Ventura. The exhibition, entitled Continuum, investigates concepts of time, space, and reality within the realm of science fiction and hard scientific theory. Inspired by Star Trek as much as he is by string theory, Ryan explores the possibilities of technology, time travel, and inter-dimensionality through a series of paintings, photo-sculptures, and videos. In his practice Ryan utilizes a variety of media to create a cross-pollinated body of work. The resulting artwork contains elements of performance, installation, and video, and is often site-specific or interactive in nature. He often emphasizes the art making process out of the studio, in public spaces where the viewer can experience of the creative act itself. Ryan has an MFA in Sculpture and New Genres from Claremont Graduate University and currently lives in Ventura, California.

	CAROLE SILVERSTEIN

     JANUARY 25 – FEBRUARY 23, 2008

RECEPTION:	FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 2008, 5:00 TO 9:00 PM
DURING FIRST FRIDAY

643 A Project Space is pleased to exhibit a new body of work by Los Angeles artist Carole Silverstein. Usually known for her paintings, this will be Silverstein’s first solo show of Ultrachrome Digital Prints created from original hand-made collages. A site-specific floor drawing will be created in dialogue with these prints.

Silverstein’s objective in this work is to transport us into the logic of dreams. They are meant to be places of the mind, little worlds unto themselves. The imagery is constructed through juxtapositions, revealing divergent systems and their points of contact. Silverstein notes that, “Like fairy tales, each springs from the subconscious but based on the specifics of real places and textures far and near, exotic and mundane. They induce travel as a state of mind, and suggest the simultaneity of cosmic events”. In her studio practice, these limited edition prints represent a small collection from her ongoing series of collages, which exist in hardbound books (currently over 500 made since 1997).

Carole Silverstein has exhibited in galleries and alternative venues throughout the U.S. She received her MFA from Queens College, CUNY and her BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She lives and works in Los Angeles with her husband and son, and will be having a solo show of her paintings at Overtones in Culver City in September 2008. www.carolesilverstein.com

A reception will be held on Friday, February 1, 2008 from 5:00-9:00 pm. The show is free and open to the public. 643 A Project Space is an alternative contemporary art gallery exhibiting emerging and established national and international artists.

PAUL BENAVIDEZ NEW PAINTINGS
OPENING: Saturday, August 18, 2007 during the Ventura Summer ArtWalk

RECEPTION: Saturday August 25th 6:00 – 9:00pm

643 Project Space
643 N. Ventura Av. Ventura, Ca.
www.643projectspace.com

643 Project Space is pleased to exhibit new paintings by Paul Benavidez. The new paintings are diptychs of impressive size as well as drawings of studies for the paintings.

With simplicity and economy Benavidez created an enveloping space with intersecting planes and little objects Benavidez calls “pour paintings.” From a purely theoretical perspective, pun intended, the diptych playfully and visually dislodges or dissolves at the picture plane, which literally is the surface of the painting’s pictorial. The color elements or pour paintings hover just in and out of the picture’s environment causing the serene dissolution. Benavidez writes, “At some point, I began to envision Piero Della Francesca’s studies in perspective and how one-point perspective could be integral in establishing algebraic trees in a three-dimensional form, similar to the studies of the Platonic Solids.” But, Benavidez stops short of describing any solid object or other information; at least that is what it seems. If one looks at Piero Della Francesca’s Platonic Solids in perspective, (the first person in history to draw the polyhedral forms in space) the viewer would expect to see something tightly sitting within the co-ordinances of the painting’s structure, but instead one is caught-up in a visually transcending and gravity free space. It should be noted also, that the new work is influenced by an ongoing project with mathematician and computer scientist J.J. LeTourneau whose visual counting system uses node labeled trees.

Paul Benavidez is an active multi-disciplinary artist working in several genres. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art Studio from the University of California, Santa Barbara and is the recipient of fellowships/grants, and awards. He lives and works in his studio in Ventura and is co-director with Carolyn Friend, of the Upfront Gallery, a contemporary art venue located in Ventura

A reception will be held on Saturday, August 25th 2007 from 6:00 – 9:00pm. The show is free and open to the public. 643 Project Space is an alternative contemporary art gallery exhibiting emerging and established national and international artists.
