"Using the human body and photography to disrupt an internal confinement. A visual dialog of self-limitation transforming to euphoria." - Han Harader
643 Project Space is pleased to exhibit the work of Han Harader, in their first solo exhibition, “The Odyssey.” Han Harader was adopted at birth then raised in Ventura, California. Growing up as an adopted gay person of color in a white dominated school made Han disassociate from peers early on. Finding art to be the way of relating to others was what led to the studies of life drawing, surrealism, expressionism, and then photography. Harader’s connections with other artists helped shape the artistic direction of their work.
Through their studies of figure drawing Harader garnered insight into human anatomy and the use of lighting to define form. These early practices provided them with a strong influence in their photographic work. Within the drawings there was typically a mutilation shown that altered the perceived reality. These tortuous looking figures were hidden from the public because of the correlation they felt between themselves and the works. This twisted image of self is consistently shown throughout Han’s career.
Photography allowed Han the opportunity to develop a sense of visual story telling. Often portraying an open dialog of resentment towards American beauty standards by allowing the skin to fold over itself while creating organic compositions. The rebellion against these standards is produced in an attempt to break free of what Harader had been compared to. Han leaves these photographed bodies anonymous as an exploration of the limited expression felt throughout early developmental years.
An opening reception will be held on Friday, April 6, 6-9:00pm, at 643 Project Space, 643 N. Ventura Ave., Ventura, CA. Gallery hours are by appointment only. Please contact mfurmanski@sbcglobal in order to schedule an appointment.
